Pernicious Anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, after starting injections how long does it take to be cured?

Q. i was diagnosed with B12 deficiency anemia and up tp now i have taken 7 shots and some symtoms are a little better,i want to know how long does it take to have all symptoms (weakness ,tingling ,pain) vanished?,does anybody has gone through this course of treatment?if so please tell me.thank you.

A. You will have to take B12 for the rest of your life. If you have neurologic symptoms due to B12 deficiency, the result of treatment depends on how early treatment was started in large part. Too late, and B12 will not reverse the symptoms. It depends too on whether the main cause of your symptoms is the peripheral nerve or the posterior columns of the spinal cord. A nerve heals about 1mm a day. ( rough estimate) so if you have numbness up 1 inch, figure 25 days for that inch. Most people have 'way more than that when the problem is discovered.
Make sure you have been carefully checked for other causes of numbness, weakness, pain-- CIDP, and the usual suspects- Diabetes ( with a glucose tolerance) heavy metals, collagen diseases, etc. Better to be careful and sure, that to use "Post hoc" reasoning and find out a year or two down the road something else was going on.

What are symptoms of being folate anemic?
Q. I just found out I am folate anemic. Vitamin B deficiency. Are my symptoms normal? Pale skin, cold hands and feet, lost of taste, boney face and depression and mood swings. Also my doctor told me to take supplements including vitamin B12, B6 and multi vitamins and they give me a B shot every 2 weeks. So how long will I suffer these symptoms?

A.

Can someone help with symptoms of a vitamin deficiency?
Q. Does anyone know what symptoms a Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause? Thanks

A.

anyone know symptoms of vitamin b12 deficiency?
Q. i've been really tired lately and losing weight, i weigh around 99lbs. i used to weigh 125lbs. i get really shakey and need to carry food with me. i get out of breath.and my hair is getting so dry and thin. i've said something to my doctor about the weight and he said you look fine, but i don't think it's normal to lose weight for no reason and i just don't feel well and i look awful too. i know taking medicine for reflux can cause vitamin b12 deficiency and i take nexium for years.

A. Sudden unexplained weight loss should always be investigated to find out the cause, especially if you also feel tired and shaky. Your doctor will want to check you for diabetes, overactive thyroid gland, hidden infections, and other causes of weight loss. He or she will probably arrange blood tests and a chest x-ray. Don't put off going - the sooner the cause is found, the sooner you can be treated and on the way to recovery.

Sometimes weight loss can be a sign of a depressive illness, and your doctor will want to know how you are feeling emotionally. In the meantime, try to eat a healthy diet. It can help to keep a food diary for a few days to see exactly what you are eating. Healthy between-meal-snacks such as fruit, muesli, smoked salmon sandwiches, and cheese can help you put on weight. High-carb foods such as rice, pasta and bread are also a good idea. good luck

i've had symptoms of vitamin b12 deficiency for two years, does it mean that now i have permanent nerve damage?

Q. because some people told me that if a vitamin b12 deficiency is left untreated for more then 6 months,it will cause some permanent nerve damage, and i have had the symptoms for 2 years now including (chronic insomnia, chronic fatigue, numbness in my fingers and toes, some muscle cramps, and i can feel my heartbeat and also hear it in my ears, and a very itchy scrotum), do you think that now i have some permanent nerve damage?

A. No! Vitamin B12 deficiency or hypocobalaminemia is a low blood level of vitamin
B12, it can cause permanent
damage to nervous tissue
as a long term effect. Vitamin B 12 was discovered from its relationship to the
disease pernicious anemia , which is an autoimmune disease that destroys parietal cells in the stomach that secrete intrinsic factor . Pernicious anemia,
untreated, is usually fatal
within three years. Once
identified, however, it can
be treated successfully and
with relative ease (although it cannot be
cured and continued
treatment is required).
Intrinsic factor is crucial for
the normal absorption of
B12 in amounts that occur in foods, and thus a lack of
intrinsic factor, as seen in
pernicious anemia, causes a
vitamin B 12 deficiency.

Can b12 anemia spread from mother to son?
Q. My mom was diagnosed a few years ago with Vitamin b12 deficiency/anemia. Is it a genetic thing?

A. Maybe not. If U experience any such symptoms, it is curable by Acupressure techniques & Indian Natural Remedies.

What causes symptoms in pernicious anemia?
Q. I'm looking for information as to the biochemical reason for pernicious anemia causing symptoms such as sore tongue, difficulty swallowing and stomach pain. I know it's due to a B12 deficiency, but how does that extend to the symptoms I mentioned above? Please cite references if you know of any. I've been searching online for an hour with no luck. Thank you very much, and 10 points for the best answer.

A. I thought this was a result of an iron deficiency, so I looked this term up on the internet. This is what I found:

People who have pernicious anemia can't absorb enough vitamin B12 from food due to a lack of intrinsic (in-TRIN-sik) factor, a protein made in the stomach. This leads to vitamin B12 deficiency.

The condition is called pernicious ("deadly") anemia because it was often fatal in the past, before vitamin B12 treatments were available. Now, pernicious anemia usually is easy to treat with vitamin B12 pills or shots.

With ongoing care and proper treatment, most people who have pernicious anemia can recover, feel well, and live normal lives.

This article doesn't address specific symptoms, but I think you should feel fortunate that at least your symptoms helped lead you to a diagnosis and possible treatment. It also said that if left untreated it can lead to symptoms and conditions much worse that that. The inflammation in any condition is debilitating and can drain you of energy and compound or complicate any disorder. You just need a regimen to compensate for your disorder so you can mend.

Just diagnosed with vitamin b12 deficiency?
Q. I'm 17 years old and I have just been diagnosed with vitamin b12 deficiency. I'm going to be put on shots.
What does it mean and how could it have developed? What are the symptoms? Will the shots help with fatigue, mood, ect?

A. I too have a b12 deficiency.
If you're a vegetarian or vegan you're more likely to have a b12 deficiency, but I ate a diet with lots of dairy, meat and eggs! Some people have trouble with the absorption while some don't get enough through their intake.
I was always fatigued, headaches and pain all over. But it's hard to tell whether these symptoms are from the other conditions I have, or from the b12. I've read it can take years for the symptoms of a deficiency to be felt.
The shots may help, they may not but you should continue with them even if you don't feel better.
Just to let you know, the shots hurt a lot! More than any other injection I've had. The medicine is very sticky which makes it painful when it goes into the muscle. My nurse would always push quite hard into my arm where she was going to give the injection. This gets the nerves ready for the pain and it doesn't hurt so much.

Also, side note, if you can, ask your doctor if you can be tested for Celiacs disease. As soon as I was tested and went gluten free I wasn't as deficient anymore (and my folate, which I was deficient in also, is a lot better!)

Is it possible to treat vit B12 deficiency without taking suppliments, ie. only through dietary changes?

Q. I have been a vegetarian for last 10 years and an occasional drinker. Lately i am experiencing many b12 deficiency symptoms - tingling in hands/legs, chapped lips, canker sores, fatigue, drowsiness etc. I have started eating 2 eggs and drinking one litre milk daily. Is it possible to treat it this way or should I get vitamin capsules?

A. Go to the doctors first and ask for a blood test to confirm you are deficient in B12. The most reliable sources of B12 can be found in yeast extract, nutritional yeast flakes (e.g Engevital) fortified soya products such as dairy free margarine and dairy free milks and breakfast cereals.
It is a misconception that vegans cannot get B12 from their diet, i have never needed to take supplements but some vegans choose to take a 10 microgram B12 supplement daily.

What is the normal range for vitamin b12?
Q. My neurologist diagnosed me with vitamin b12 deficiency. My level was barely 100. She has me giving myself b12 injections for the rest of my life.

My question is I have been sick since November with mono and cmv. And my current doctor's are looking into fibromyalgia, which I have all the symptoms for. But why would these other doctor's who did bloodwork not notice the low vitamin b12.

Is a level of barely 100 really low??

A. Normal B12 range is 200 to 600, so your results are considered low.

The bloodwork that the other doctors did might not have included a B12 test. From reading, it's my understanding that this is a separate lab test and not automatically included with other comprehensive lab tests such as a CBC (complete blood count) or a CMP (comprehensive metabolic panel). It seems to be a followup test ordered when other test results indicate a problem, such as a low hemoglobin (blood iron).

B12 is stored in the liver, so it can take some time (even years) for a B12 deficiency to show up after you've had problems absorbing it. (Usually it's related to lack of intrinsic factor in the stomach.)

Mono (Epstein-Barr Virus) and CMV can certainly cause fibromyalgia-like symptoms. Or if you have fibromyalgia, EBV and CMV can make your symptoms much worse. With fibromyalgia, even one sleepless night can make your symptoms worse. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 10 years ago, and I have had EBV and CMV.

A. I thought this was a result of an iron deficiency, so I looked this term up on the internet. This is what I found:

As soon as I was tested and went gluten free I wasn't as deficient anymore (and my folate, which I was deficient in also, is a lot better!)

anyone know symptoms of vitamin b12 deficiency?

Q. i've been really tired lately and losing weight, i weigh around 99lbs. i used to weigh 125lbs. i get really shakey and need to carry food with me. i get out of breath.and my hair is getting so dry and thin. i've said something to my doctor about the weight and he said you look fine, but i don't think it's normal to lose weight for no reason and i just don't feel well and i look awful too. i know taking medicine for reflux can cause vitamin b12 deficiency and i take nexium for years.

Is it possible to treat vit B12 deficiency without taking suppliments, ie. only through dietary changes?

Q. I have been a vegetarian for last 10 years and an ocassional drinker.

A. Nope...eating foods containing B vitamins only maintains good levels of B12. When you have a defiency it is a lot harder to treat with diet aline, you need to have the supplements....your doctor may even suggest a B12 injection.

A.

What causes symptoms in pernicious anemia?

How effective is the treatment of Vitamin B12 deficiency even when it has affected the nerves.?
Q. Are there natural remedies? How soon can one see noticeable improvements in the patients. What are the early signs that the patient is responding to the B12 injections

A. I was going to answer with this: "generally, once nerve damage has occurred as a result of B12 deficiency, treatment with B12 provides little benefit in relieving the damage." However, I just found a scientific paper from 2011 in "Nutrition Journal" that cites references to studies that found: in cases of pernicious anemia, intramuscular injections of B12 can reduce neurological symptoms. Whether or not neurological symptoms that exist independently of pernicious anemia can be successfully treated is not clear.

In this same paper, the researchers found neurological improvements from high-dose oral supplements of B12 in elderly patients with low B12 status but with no overt neurological symptoms.

Best wishes and good luck.

How much time it will it take for Vit B12 injection to show its results?
Q. I am having vit B12 levels at 96pg/ml as comapre to normal range of 250-1000pg/ml. I am taking neurobion forte injections for this. I want to know how long/how many days will it take me to reach normal level of vit B12? And how much time will it take for the symptoms of vit b12 deficiency to disappear?

A. I am so not an expert on this, esp the shots. But I have to share my experience with you. I JUST (yesterday) started sublingual (under the tongue) B complex. The product is this:

http://www.amazon.com/Spring-Valley-Vitamin-B-Complex-Sublingual/dp/B001QVGL1E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337904107&sr=8-1

A pharmacist recommended it to me. It cost about $5.00 at Walmart (amazon is way overpriced), a 2 ounce bottle which is 60 doses (once a day dose) The link has all the nutrition facts of it. Key fact is that each dose offers 20,000% of the recommended daily value of B12.

I have only taken it twice: once yesterday with my dinner, and once this morning before work. Before lunch today (this is like...16 hours after buying it!) I noticed that I felt so...good. Rested, energized, focused. CALM! Not at all the same as the effect from caffeine or sugar (energy roller coaster)...and nowhere near the crackhouse feeling of energy drinks which make me queasy and jittery.

For what it is worth...
1. 43 year old female. I am not in the best of health but not complaining. I am overweight. I am dealing with the early onset of Texas summer heat which has made me a lot more tired lately.

2. I am phobic of injections so B12 shots like what you are getting...were not an option. I have tried B complex pills and noticed no change.

3. I have used all kind of caffeine drinks in the past. I still enjoy them, but I didn't NEED them today.

I hope that is some information you can use. Just a personal testimony about sublingual. It doesn't have to be a big whooop. Not expensive, not prescription, no needles! This stuff is magical.

I wonder if your injections are necessary. If it was me, I would certainly be grateful to know about sublingual. I haven't had the shots but honestly, I can't imagine feeling any better than I did today.

A.

anyone know symptoms of vitamin b12 deficiency?
Q. i've been really tired lately and losing weight, i weigh around 99lbs. i used to weigh 125lbs. i get really shakey and need to carry food with me. i get out of breath.and my hair is getting so dry and thin. i've said something to my doctor about the weight and he said you look fine, but i don't think it's normal to lose weight for no reason and i just don't feel well and i look awful too. i know taking medicine for reflux can cause vitamin b12 deficiency and i take nexium for years.
