what do i say if i have to talk to a group about vitamin c deficiency diseases?

Q. i have to talk about 'scurvy' 'rickets' and something like 'berry berry' to a large group at a pirate themed camp for kids aged nine to twelve. i also have to make smoothies with lots of vitamins, but i really need something to say to the group about lack of vitamin c and the diseases that apply to it.

A. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is essential for the formation of bone and connective tissue (which binds other tissues and organs together). Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron, and it helps burns and wounds heal. Like vitamin E, vitamin C is an antioxidant: It protects cells against damage by free radicals, which are reactive by-products of normal cell activity. Vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy. In adults, the deficiency usually results from a diet low in vitamin C. For example, vitamin C deficiency may develop in people who eat only such foods as dried meat, tea, toast, and canned vegetables. Smoking increases the vitamin C requirement by 30 to 50%. Surgery, and burns can significantly increase the body's requirements for vitamin C and the risk of vitamin C deficiency. The diagnosis of scurvy is based on symptoms. Blood tests detect a very low level of vitamin C. Scurvy is treated with daily vitamin C supplements. Such treatment plus iron supplements can cure the anemia.

Is there anyone who can tell me if the suplements I am taking are safe to mix?
Q. They are:
Primrose oil
vitamin C
magnesium
probiotic
adrenal support supplement
and im also taking Buspar for anxiety

i just want to be sure this combination is safe. Thank you!

A. Several reports describe seizures in individuals taking evening primrose oil (EPO). Some of these seizures developed in people with a previous seizure disorder, or in individuals taking EPO in combination with anesthetics. Based on these reports, people with seizure disorders should not take EPO. EPO should be used cautiously with drugs used to treat mental illness such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine®), thioridazine (Mellaril®), trifluoperazine (Stelazine®), or fluphenazine (Prolixin®), due to an increased risk of seizure. Patients who plan to undergo surgery requiring anesthesia should stop taking EPO two weeks ahead of time because of the possibility of seizure.

Other reports describe occasional headache, abdominal pain, nausea, and loose stools in people taking EPO. In animal studies, gamma-linolenic acid (an ingredient of evening primrose oil) is reported to decrease blood pressure. Early results in human studies do not show consistent changes in blood pressure.

There may be a problem with the interaction between primose oil and buspar since medicine for seizures, or depression can add to sleepiness caused by BuSpar. So you might want to ask your doctor about this.

Dietary magnesium does not pose a health risk, however very high doses of magnesium supplements, which may be added to laxatives, can promote adverse effects such as diarrhea. Magnesium toxicity is more often associated with kidney failure, when the kidney loses the ability to remove excess magnesium. Very large doses of laxatives also have been associated with magnesium toxicity, even with normal kidney function. The elderly are at risk of magnesium toxicity because kidney function declines with age and they are more likely to take magnesium-containing laxatives and antacids.

Signs of excess magnesium can be similar to magnesium deficiency and include mental status changes, nausea, diarrhea, appetite loss, muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, extremely low blood pressure, and irregular heartbeat.

Both magnesium and vitamin C can be considered adrenal support supplements, so check the other inggredients on the supplement you are taking.

http://www.bluemountainrx.com/adrenal.htm

Probiotic bacteria are already part of the normal digestive system and are considered safe.

Cold or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, or depression can add to sleepiness caused by BuSpar.

http://www.drugs.com/buspar.html

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate dietary supplements in the same way it regulates medicines. A dietary supplement can be sold with limited or no research on how well it works or on its safety.

Always tell your doctor if you are using a dietary supplement or if you are thinking about combining a dietary supplement with your conventional medical treatment. It may not be safe to forgo your conventional medical treatment and rely only on a dietary supplement.

What vitamin is a person lacking if you bruise easily?
Q. I got this huge bruise under my bicep and it doesn't even seem like I hit it that hart but it is so big and so disgusting. Am I lacking a certain vitamin that can help me not bruise so easily?

A. Bruising easily does not mean that you have a serious health problem, especially if bruising is minimal or only shows up once in a while. Women bruise more easily than men, especially from minor injuries on the thighs, buttocks, and upper arms.

Older adults often bruise easily from minor injuries, especially injuries to the forearms, hands, legs, and feet. As a person ages, the skin becomes less flexible and thinner because there is less fat under the skin. The cushioning effect of the skin decreases as the fat under the skin decreases. These changes, along with skin damage from exposure to the sun, cause blood vessels to break easily. When blood vessels break, bruising occurs.

Occasionally easy bruising is a sign of a health problem and may be caused by:

A medication, such as aspirin, blood thinners (anticoagulants), or some antibiotics.
Infection that causes the buildup of toxin in the blood or tissues (sepsis).
A bleeding or clotting disorder, such as hemophilia, von Willebrand's disease, or thrombocytopenia.
Other diseases that affect clotting. Examples include:
Chronic inflammatory diseases, such as lupus.
Liver disease, such as cirrhosis.
Some types of cancer, such as Hodgkin's disease, leukemia, or multiple myeloma.
Inflammation of a blood vessel (vasculitis).
Malnutrition, such as deficiencies of vitamins B12, C, or K, or folic acid.
Bruises that do not go away within 4 weeks of an injury may mean that another problem is preventing healing or that the injury was worse than you suspected.

Call your health professional for an evaluation if you are concerned about how easily you bruise, or if bruises don't seem to be healing normally. Your health professional can evaluate the cause of your bruises and recommend treatment.
Bruising easily is rarely a sign of nutrient deficiency. Bruises are created when the tissue just under the skin gets injured, resulting in a buildup of blood that causes the skin to turn black and blue. Sometimes easy bruising runs in families. And women are more likely to bruise from a minor injury, especially on the thighs, buttocks, and upper arms. It is also common for older adults to bruise easily as capillaries age and the skins protective layers become thinner. Although uncommon, vitamin C deficiency can sometimes result in a heightened susceptibility to bruising.

Increased bruising may be a side effect of certain medications that thin the skin or interfere with the bloods ability to clot, such as steroids, cortisone drugs, aspirin, or ibuprofen. It is also thought that some dietary supplements, including vitamin E, fish oil, ginger, garlic, and ginkgowhich can have similar effects on the blood and skinmay augment bruising. However, the health benefits of these medications and supplements are probably worth a little extra bruising, so consult with your health care practitioner before discontinuing them.

If you are concerned about how easily you bruise, try increasing your intake of the bioflavonoid compounds found in plant foods, such as citrus fruits and berries, which can potentially reduce bruising by strengthening capillary walls and the surrounding connective tissue. If bruises dont seem to be healing normally, visit your health care practitioner to evaluate the cause and discuss treatment.

What is a good over the counter treatment for psoriasis?
Q. I won't be able to see my dermatologist until January, and my psoriasis is spreading. My cream has run out. I'm using T-Gel shampoo for my scalp. I don't have anything for the psoriasis on my skin though. What is a good over the counter treatment that can keep it under control until January?
I've had psoriasis for a couple of years.
I used a topical medication from my dermatologist, but that ran out and she said she has to see me before I get another one prescribed.

A. HI Sylvie

Here are some ideas on how to heal the issue.

Cause
Psoriasis is metabolic in nature and can be triggered by environmental or stressful conditions, poor diet, flu-like conditions, the administration of penicillin, and nutritional deficiencies. Patients with psoriasis are also a higher risk of rheumatoid diseases.

Psoriasis can be caused by food allergies, essential fatty acid deficiencies, low digestive enzyme and hydrochloric acid levels, vitamin B complex deficiencies, emotional stress, illness, drugs (such as beta-blockers, lithium, and chloroquine), poison ivy or oak, skin damage, and several infections, bacterial or viral in origin.

------------------------------...

Natural Cures

Aromatherapy: The following essential oils are recommended: bergamot (to help heal skin plaques), lavender (to reduce excessive itching), melissa (for irritated skin), jasmine (for dry sensitive skin), geranium (for dry irritating skin), and sandalwood mysore (for dehydrated, inflamed, and sensitive skin).

Diet: Screen for and eliminate all foods to which you are allergic or sensitive. Eat a varied diet of organic, whole foods, rotating foods as much as possible. Eliminate wheat and wheat products for 1-3 months. Consume seafood high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, and each day, on a rotating basis, take one tablespoon of olive or flaxseed oil, and be sure to drink plenty of pure, filtered water. Organic beef, venison, poultry, garlic, onions, parsley, organic plain yogurt, and sauerkraut are also recommended.

Flower Essences: Rescue Remedy Cream® applied topically can soothe symptoms.

Herbs: Combine equal parts of burdock, sarsaparilla, and cleavers tinctures and take one teaspoon three times a day. Silymarin (milk thistle) is also helpful for psoriasis due to its positive effects on liver function.

Homeopathy: Useful homeopathic remedies include Psorinum, Sulfur, Graphites, Cuprum met., and Arsen alb.

Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is the application of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used in the home as part of a self-care program. Many Naturopathic Physicians, Physical Therapists and Day Spas use Hydrotherapy as part of treatment. I suggest several at-home hydrotherapy treatments.
*Purified water is essential for any hydrotherapy treatment. Remedies for Treating Chlorinated Bath Water offers clear instructions and recommendations.

Juice Therapy: The following juice combinations can be helpful: apple and carrot; beet, cucumber, and grape; and beet, carrot, burdock, yellowdock and garlic.

Lifestyle: Mild cases of psoriasis may be helped by daily exposure to sunlight. Frequent exercise is also recommended.

Nutritional Supplementation: The following nutrients can be helpful: evening primrose oil, omega-3 essential fatty acids, vitamin A, vitamin B Complex, vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, vitamin C with bioflavonoids, folic acid, lecithin, zinc, and a multimineral supplement. Taking hydrochloric acid (HCL) with each meal can also be of use.

In Europe fumaric acid treatment in the form of fumaric acid tablets, ointment, lotion, and scalp lotions is widely used to reverse symptoms of psoriasis

Topical Treatment: Apply seawater to the affected skin several times daily. Linseed or avocado oil, aloe vera gel, and/or capsaicin cream applied topically can reduce the scaling, thickness, redness, and itching.

Best of health to you

Hereditary dark circles..What is the best solution to reduce them for dark complected skin like mine?

Q. I am a man and I was born with dark circles and it has been ruining my life ever since I was born. I know men shouldn't worry about dark circles but mine are hereditary and very dark compared to the rest of my face and look just plain awful. I have light brown skin. My skin tone is a tad darker than Jennifer Lopez skin tone. My dark circles are on my eyelids all around to my under eyes. Dr Seckell in Massachusetts says he can do the The Arcus Marginalis Release with Fat Repositioning but I heard it results in hyperpigmentation in the face.. So I'd be a little worried about having that procedure done. I went to several cosmetologists and dermatologists and their reply is "Well you have dark complected skin and their is no cure to fix your kind of skin, your under eyes are too thin and it is natural discoloration of the skin". Then they prescribe me creams that simply wont work like the vitamin C serum with eye cream whitener or they tell me to use hydroquinone on the eye area, which is ineffective also. I know there isn't a cure for dark circles, which is surprising to me, with all the brilliant cosmetologists out there that cant seem to find a solution for people with darker skin to help fix their dark circle or any skin pigmentation problems for that matter but they can do miracles for people with white skin, maybe i should've been born white, to make it easier on them. If you ask me, white people already have perfect skin, what do they need fixing?. Anyway, I am currently using products from bobbi brown which is a hydrating cream, malt colored eye shadow for my dark circle eyelids and creamy concealer with the finishing powder for my under eye dark circles and it works good but Its a regimen I would have to use every morning after taking a bath until the day I die and these products come in such small sizes and last for less than 2 months and would cost me money every 2 months. I am trying to find a cream out there that can be very effective in reducing the dark circles on my eye lids and my under eyes, so I wouldn;t have to be depressed to look at my face and see my dark circles appear after the make-up has rubbed off during the night, Look, I am not going to fool myself, I know cosmetologists are too busy finding solutions for for people with lighter skin and ignoring people with darker skin tones but all I'm asking for is a cream that can at least minimize the appearance and a very good concealer and eye shadow to put on that treatment cream to minimize my dark circles on my lids and under eyes. Please help me.. because this is effecting my everyday life. I look so much better when these dark circles are covered and when they're not, i look completely horrible. So someone out there, just tell me what I should do about this.

A. You went to see a dermatologist, but you don't believe them? Do you believe me?

The answer? No beauty products can do that. If you have concealer on, and you look sideways, you can still see those dark bags under the eyes or some calls it dark circles. Only in magazines they're airbrushed & TV, they look like they're NOT THERE.

Without wearing tons of make up, they can't just go away. Don't believe me? Google them and see their latest photos.
Jane Fonda had surgery done, admitted she hated surgeries, but that's ONE she actually had done.

You CAN try to sleep the same amount of hours everyday, and eat all the healthy foods from Mother Nature.

It's possible changing your sleep & diet can do miracles.
Sleep deprivation, chronic allergies and vitamin deficiency can cause undereye circles - so eat greens and be sure to get plenty of sleep!" Vera Wang is a billionaire, designing the best wedding gowns around in this part of town, Kim Kardashian's 3 wedding gowns are from Vera. Take a look @ her eyes, she's got one of the worst bags around, and with all that money and best beauty advisers, she can't get rid of her dark circles.

Even Julianne Hough (Rock of Ages - Dancing with the Stars) she's 23 btw, Oprah & Hilary Clinton who buys the best concealers money can buy can't cover theirs. Elizabeth Hendrickson as Chloe Mitchell Fisher on the Young & the Restless HAS them, too! No makeup can conceal hers.

Someone on YA! asked 'why does concealer/foundation never cover spots?
for me it always rubs off within an hour, any tips?'
My answer was: 'It's a billion dollar business. I was watching @ the mall yesterday a LIFE-SIZE video poster advertisement for a teen cover magazine called LUCKY, while waiting in line for H&M for 30 mins. This model was wearing makeup, but once she looked up, you could see 'bags under her eyes!' That's right, and I've posted many times here since 2009, NOTHING CAN COVER BAGS UNDER EYES (see above for my reply).'

You can get undereye filler: They cost an average of $600 - $1,000 every four to six months. If injections are too shallow, you can get bumps as well as a blue tint. The dermatologist will have to dissolve the filler with a second injection of hyaluronidase and start again.

How to increase height more faster before 18?
Q. I am 16.. i want to be at least height at 168 cm.. Does taking vitamin c with zinc and niacin/multivitamin supplements will help my height is increasing ? i gain 1.5 cm in my height this week and measure my height on evening.
my height is 148.5 cm now..

A. There are numbers of reasons why a person is not tall, and most of them do not
have any effective treatment.
Probably the commonest cause is genetic, that is to say that one or
both your parents are below average height, or that short stature runs
in your family. There is really nothing that can be done about this.
The other cause that most people know about is a deficiency of growth
hormone, which is produced by the pituitary gland situated at the base
of the brain. If a deficiency of this hormone is discovered early
enough in life, it is sometimes possible to give treatment with
injections of growth hormone to increase height. However, by the time
you get to 17 years of age, your bones may not respond to the effect
of the hormone. The only way to find out if you have this condition is
to discuss it with your doctor. Blood tests an X-rays to see how your
bones are growing can usually make the diagnosis, but for treatment
you would need referral to a specialist. These investigations should
also show if there is any other cause for your short stature.
But you should not think that it will definitely help you. Medical
science can not make you the way you want to be - and it is true not
only for height - so it's better to accept yourself as you are. Tall
people are not necessary happier than short people - look at the
tallest man in Ukraine, who was stripped of his title, lives alone
with his mother, and has constant legs pain!
The exercises they advertise on-line may increase your height
temporarily for 0,5 - 1 cm, it's hardly noticeable and does not worth
the trouble: your height varies during the day on its own.
Very occasionally, surgeons will try an operation to lengthen the
bones in the legs. This is very difficult, and takes many months or
even years, and a series of operations. It is a dreadful operation,
and I mentioned it only because you may have heard of it. Never
consider mutilating yourself for a miserable increase in height, and
be happy as you are.

How do you treat your psoriasis?
Q. I have tried OTC treatments, and i can't afford to do the RX stuff. Any suggestions for me? I am young, (16+) but my skin is so sensitive. So anything that i can do has to be very gentle with my skin. Thanks
I have severe psoriasis on my right ankle and one spot on my left leg about as big as a half dollar. Mine never seems to diminish and it stays cracked and really bad all the time.

How can you make your hair grow faster?
Q. I'm trying to grow my hair out long and, being the impatient person I am, I'd like to know a way to make it grow faster. Also, I'd like for it be stronger and smoother. I tend to have a lot of little fly-aways that drive me crazy. I've heard that prenatal vitamins are good for making your hair grow, but are they safe to take if you aren't pregnant? Thanks in advance for your help!

A. If you want to add length to your hair, you can use hair extensions.

Prenatal vitamins will not harm you in any way if you use them and are not pregnant.

While there is no proven way to make hair grow, the less hair you lose the more you have, right?

Be nice to your hair. Your hair falls out naturally on its own, but you might be pulling it out a little faster with the things you do. The gentler you are with your hair, the less of it you'll yank out.

* Don't pull your hair into tight ponytails or cornrows. Use butterfly clips and loose braids instead.

* Brush it carefully. If you have wavy or curly hair, you should use a wide tooth comb while your hair is still wet, since brushes can disrupt curl pattern and cause frizz.

Try to avoid tangles by not piling your hair on the top of your head when you lather it in the shower--when you roll it all up into a ball like that, there's more of a chance of tangling. Right before brushing, use your fingers to gently comb through your hair. And when you brush, start at the ends, and hold the strand that you're brushing with your other hand so that if you pull on the hair with a brush, you don't pull on the root (you pull from the grip of your hand instead).

* Minimize how much you style your hair. Any kind of styling that involves pulling your hair at the root (blow drying straight, straight iron, curling iron, rollers) will contribute to hair loss.

* Avoid or minimize chemical treatments like dyes, tints, bleaches, straighteners, and permanent waves. These weaken your hair and increase the likelihood of breakage and loss.

Take a daily multivitamin. Your body needs several building blocks in order to produce a healthy head of hair, and you can easily meet your body's requirement by taking a multivitamin consistently. Keep in mind, however, that it can take several months to notice the results, so don't get discouraged.

* Research suggests that iron deficiency makes hair loss worse. Women with heavy periods are at a higher risk of iron deficiency. However, unless you have an iron deficiency diagnosed by a doctor, you shouldn't take iron supplements. They can upset your stomach and cause severe constipation, and iron overload can be dangerous. Taking a multivitamin and eating iron-rich foods (tofu, lentils, beans, oysters, spinach, prunes, raisins, lean beef) is more than enough.

* If you're a vegetarian, eat foods rich in Vitamin C whenever you eat iron-rich veggies. Vitamin C will help your body absorb the kind of iron that is found in vegetables.

Avoid dramatic weight loss. As you shed pounds, you shed hair. The dramatic changes that your body undergoes when it loses weight quickly (the change in nutrients, the stress involved) can cause your hair to thin. Diets low in protein and iron (e.g. very low-fat) and also those high in protein but low in fruits and vegetables (e.g. Atkins) that result in dramatic weight loss can also trigger significant hair loss. Instead, keep a balanced diet, and focus on gradual calorie reduction (one or two pounds a week).

* Each hair on your head grows for 2-5 years, slows down for about six weeks, and rests for 3-5 months before falling out so a new hair can grow in its place. Normally, 15% of your hair is at the resting phase, but a sudden change in nutrition can cause some hair follicles in the growing phase to switch into the resting phase prematurely, possibly raising the percentage to more than 30%.

Relax. Stress is a common cause of reversible hair loss. When you experience physical or emotional turmoil, it can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 4 months for the results to show up in your hair.

What treatments, drugs, or vitamins would you suggest to someone who has iron-deficiency anemia?

Q. What treatments, drugs, or vitamins would you suggest to someone who has iron-deficiency anemia? What would you suggest to someone who has pernicious anemia?

A. I have iron-deficient anemia and the nurse told me to stop drinking so much tea (b/c tea blocks iron absorbtion), eat more greens, fish, eggs, take vitamin B12 or iron.

not sure about the other.

How can I make my hair grow faster during the summer?
Q. I really want to grow it longer over the summer. I use to straiten it almost everyday for school but over the summer, I wont (unless I go out with my friends or something). I never dye my hair and my hair is really thick. Any tips?? Shampoos that I have to use? Vitamins?

Also any tips on what i cant do?

Thanks in advance :)

A. 1. Don't wash your hair everyday. know it sounds disgusting, but washing your hair too often pulls the strands, damages the scalp, and rids your hair of the natural oils essential for growing long, thick hair. You must allow the hair oils to condition your hair rather than constantly washing the oils out.

2. Buy some vitamins. I would recommend you buy hair, skin & nails by sundown naturals.

3. Eat protein every day. Protein is essential for healthy hair growth.

4. Make sure you meet your recommended daily intake of Vitamin C. Having a Vitamin C deficiency can cause dry, dull, and weak hair that is prone to breakage.

5. Minimize heat styling with things such as hot combs, hair dryers and curling irons.

6. Avoid chemical treatments such as bleaching, perms, coloring or highlighting.

7. Use a deep conditioning treatment. This will help hydrate strands and make them stronger.

FYI: The FDA have banned 23 more whitening products. Google it. About 17,600,000 results.
The reason cited for the proposed ban is that studies in rodents show "some evidence" that hydroquinone may act as a carcinogen or cancer-causing chemical, although its cancer-causing properties have yet to be proved in humans. Hydroquinone also has been linked with the medical condition known as ochronosis in which the skin becomes dark and thick. Dome-shaped yellowish spots and grayish-brown spots also are observed in ochronosis among black women and men in South Africa, Britain, and the U.S. Ochronosis has been observed in conjunction with hydroquinone use even in persons who have used hydroquinone-containing cosmetics for a short time. Some studies also report abnormal function of the adrenal glands and high levels of mercury in people who have used hydroquinone-containing cosmetics. For these reasons, hydroquinone has already been banned in Japan, the European Union, and Australia.

Any skin-lightening products containing hydroquinone would be considered new drugs, according to the proposed FDA regulations. The products would require FDA approval before being sold to the public and would only be available with a doctor's prescription. BB CREAMS included.

A. Hi Kacey

Probiotic bacteria are already part of the normal digestive system and are considered safe.

Cold or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, or depression can add to sleepiness caused by BuSpar.
