Have you been diagnosed with drug induced Lupus ?

Q. !0 years ago began having problem with elevated blood pressure. Was treated with the usually prescribed meds. Within the past ten years I have had a variety of unusual and often preplexing symptoms that the doctors couldn't find good answers for. Lots of guesses and lots of unsuccessful treatments and increased frustration and misery until recently. The diagnosis is drug induced Lupus and it is believed to be caused by my blood pressure meds. Bingo. The symptoms have developed over the same period I've been on the meds. My question is: Any known effective alternatives for Blood Pressure Control? Anyone else with Lupus have bizarre skin and hair folllicle issues? Any one know a reputable doctor in Kansas City Missouri to advise on alternative treatments? Any one know of a web site to purchase alternative B/P treatments that you or someone you know have had personal experience with? Are there suggestions for a great support website for Lupus?

A. Hi WIngsOfGrace

Here are some ideas to heal the issue. Also learning about detoxifying the blood by doing colon and liver cleanses will change your health forever.

Cause
Food allergies (there is a 100 percent correlation between lupus and food allergies), rheumatoid arthritis, other connective tissue diseases, parasites, candidiasis, bowel problems, and digestive enzyme deficiencies can create symptoms that mimic or exacerbate SLE. Migraines, epilepsy, and psychoses must also be ruled out before a proper course of treatment can be decided upon.

Both forms of lupus primarily strike young women (90% of cases) and young children.

The drugs hydralazine, procainamide, and beta blockers can cause false-positive readings of SLE, and can also produce a lupus-like condition that disappears when the drugs are no longer taken. Birth control pills and environmental stresses can also exacerbate lupus symptoms.

Natural Cures

Diet: Eat an organic, whole foods diet. Also avoid overeating and limit your intake of dairy, beef products, and polyunsaturated oils. Also screen for food allergies and avoid all foods to which you are allergic or sensitive. Increase your intake of vegetables, especially green, yellow, and orange, and consume non-farm-raised fish several times a week.

Herbs: Supplementation with Swedish bitters with each meal can increase hydrochloric acid production. Also drink an infusion of nettle twice a day. Other useful herbs include echinacea, goldenseal, licorice, pau d`arco, and red clover

Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is the application of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used in the home as part of a self-care program. Many Naturopathic Physicians, Physical Therapists and Day Spas use Hydrotherapy as part of treatment.

Hyperthermia: Hyperthermia involves artificially creating fever in the body for the purpose of boosting immune function. Hyperthermia can be a highly effective method of eliminating toxins and heavy metals, as well as infectious bacteria and viruses that cannot survive in elevated body temperatures.

*Purified water is essential for any hydrotherapy or hyperthermia treatment. Remedies for Treating Chlorinated Bath Water offers clear instructions and recommendations.

Juice Therapy: Drink the juice of carrot, celery, flaxseed oil, black currant oil, and garlic.

Nutritional Supplementation: Hydrochloric acid (HCL) deficiency is common in people with lupus, therefore HCL supplements with each meal is advised. Other useful nutrients include vitamin A with beta carotene, vitamin C and bioflavonoids, vitamin B complex, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, calcium, magnesium, selenium, zinc, essential fatty acids, proteolytic enzymes taken away from meals, digestive enzymes taken with meals, and the amino acids L-cysteine, L-methionine, and L-cystine.

Topical Treatment: PABA cream applied topically can help ease symptoms.

Best of health to you

help! How can i find relief for fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis?
Q. I am a 23 yr. old female and have been living with fibromyalgia and rheum. arthritis for about 2 1/2 years. It all happened after the birth of my daughter. These conditions affect my every day life so negatively that i have trouble performing the easiest tasks. I'm on multiple medicines for these conditions, but nothing eases my pain. I'm on pain relievers as well, but the barely even take the edge off. anyone else dealing with this? What should i do? pain management doc?

A. I managed my chronic pain from fibromyalgia with guaifenesin for 10 years til I learned about vitamin D3. Guaifenesin is no "cure" but it does manage the pain. My theory is that the lymph fluids thicken & pool. They pool around nerves and create pressure on the nerves. Do you wake up with muscle pain that "drains away" in a few hours if you sit up but the longer you stay in bed the more pain?

Three months ago, I started high levels of vitamin D3 for 3 weeks & became pain free. I knocked the dose down to 2000iu's a day & a week later the pain is back. After restarting high levels, the pain is managed again. I am very hopeful that this may help improve my health.

I personally did 30,000iu per day for a couple of months trying to refill my stores. It is highly recommended that you have your vit.D levels tested but my research shows toxicity only at outrageous, long term levels.

Vitamin D3 deficiency is becoming an epidemic. U.S. RDA are much too low & the prescription vitamin D supplements are the wrong type (ergocalciferol ). Luckily you can buy vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and the upper limits are extremely high. Current recommendations are for 35iu per pound - a 150# person needs minimum of 5250iu per day & the rda is 400iu. This amount is for minimal needs and does not account for depleted stores. March is when our stores are at their lowest. Low Vitamin D levels greatly increases your risk of cancer, diabetes, MS & heart attack.

My current research is leading me to believe that fibromyalgia may actually be a thyroid problem & possibly insufficient iodine (which causes iodine problems) Iodine like guaifenesin thins the mucous membranes. Iodine unlike guaifenesin is a needed nutrient. Testing is showing that 95% of people are iodine deficient.

My thyroid lab tests have always shown as "normal" but I have obvious symptoms of thyroid dysfunction (basal temp of 95F among many others) The basal temperature test is (in my mind) a more accurate testing of thyroid function.

The Barnes Basal temperature test is a simple, do it yourself test, that you can do at home. It is accurate and requires nothing more than an oral thermometer. Heres what you do. At bedtime shake down a mercury thermometer to 94F and place on the nightstand, within easy reach. DO NOT USE a DIGITAL thermometer for taking the axillary temperature because they are not as accurate. When you wake up in the morning, make sure you stay in bed quietly and take the thermometer and place it securely under your arm in your armpit. Hold it in place for ten minutes and then write down what the thermometer reads. During the ten minutes youre waiting, take your pulse for one full minute and record what this result is also.

Do this exact procedure each morning for several weeks. Make sure you do not get up to go to the bathroom or anything else. It must be done before you have any activity. You must be in bed for a minimum of two hours before reading your temperature and the reading will not be accurate if you move around or get up. Do not use an electric blanket or other electrical devices in your bed. Do not sleep on a waterbed to perform this test. A waterbed will elevate your temperature artificially. It has also been found that a womans body temperature varies with the different phases of her menstrual cycle. The second and third days of your menstrual cycle are when the most accurate/reliable temperature can be found. Therefore, it is recommended that you make note on your records with red pen on the days you were menstruating and make sure you perform your test during this week.

If youre basal temperature consistently runs below 97.8 or your pulse runs below 65 you may benefit from a trial period of thyroid medication

From what I've read, people I've talked with natural thyroid hormones are more effective than synthetic.

What population group is at highest risk for osteomalacia?
Q. a. Infants
b. Elderly men
c. Adult women
d. Children ages 2-12 years

A. Osteomalacia is vitamin D deficiency (and the spectrum of symptoms that causes.) It's commonly due to lack of sunlight exposure... and women generally have higher demands for vit D. So I'd say adult women are most at risk. Also note that in parts of the world where women are covered from head to toe, there's extremely high risk of vit D deficiency.

Elderly men (and women) may have elevated risk, as well. This is mostly due to decreased absorption (food sources) that frequently occurs as we age.

Among infants and children, vit D deficiency is called Rickets. Osteomalacia is adults only.

What population group is at highest risk for osteomalacia?
Q. a. Infants
b. Elderly men
c. Adult women
d. Children ages 2-12 years

A. The condition called Osteomalacia is one where there is a significant softening of the bones in your body. It is usually caused by a vitamin D deficiency. In children, this condition is known as rickets. The concern is that Soft bones are more likely to bow and fracture than harder, more healthy bones.

This is similar, yet different from, osteoporosis, which is a another bone disorder that can also cause bone fracturing. Osteomalacia occurs when the bone-building process in our bodies does not perform correctly, while osteoporosis develops later because of a weakening of previously constructed bone.

Some of the symptoms of osteomalacia are achy pain in the bones and muscle weakness. Typically treatment involves increasing the amount of Vitamin D and calcium in addition to treating any underlying disorders that may be contributing to the deficiencies.

People who have both inadequate dietary intake of vitamin D and little exposure to sunlight have the highest risk of developing this disorder. Therefore the risk is highest in older adults as well as those who rarely get outdoors such as people who are housebound or hospitalized.

Insufficient sunlight is the cause of many problems. Sunlight is truly indispensable to our good health and peace of mind. Many people hide from the sun and deny themselves of the suns healing powers. They fear the suns damaging ultra-violet rays. History tells us the human race evolved and thrived under the light and energy of the sun.

Call for an appointment with your health care provider if you have symptoms of osteomalacia, or if you think that you may be at risk for this disorder.

For those who are seeking a healthy solution to many issues, but don't believe that medicinal solutions are the best way to go, let me point you to an alternative care website that will shine more light on these matters.

Q. Three Weeks ago I was put on 50,000mg of vitamin D weekly because my D level was extreme. I was so depressed that I couldn't get up. I also started taking cod liver oil (fish oil). It is miraculous. My depression is so much better. Have you had your D level checked?

A. YES, about 9 months ago my doctor did some blood work on me and found my vitamin D was hardly traceable. For a year or os i was having a hard time digesting food. WOW, what a difference,There is a lot of help on Yahoo health,go check it out .I did and learned a lot about vitamin D

How do I know if have a vitamin D deficiency?
Q. I eat healthy, but I'm lactose intolerant and can't drink milk or eat most dairy products. Also, I don't spend much time in the sun because my skin is extremely pale and I burn almost instantly. Do I need to take a vitamin D supplement? I'm sure that I don't get enough vitamin D, although I don't have symptoms right now.

A. Your doctor can run tests for vitamin D as well. When getting a supplement, do get a good quality one and look for a D3 gelcap or pill instead of a D2 formulation. There are brands out there that list D3 in the ingredients list. Good luck.

Can my Vitamin D deficiency be the cause of my tics and uncontrollably movement?
Q. I been going to he doctor sense July which is when my tics started but anyways i've been tested and they said everything was fine with my brain and blood but my vitamin d in tack is low. So i was wondering could that be the problem? Cause i do have uncontrollably movement, tremors and i do have verbal tics. Like yelling or saying something really loud.
No its not tourettes, they said i didnt have those sense it starts when your younger.

A. Calcium cannot absorb without vitamin D. Calcium deficiency (hypocalcemia) symptoms include muscle spasms, tics, tremors. An ionized calcium test is the most accurate to pick up a true deficiency. Calcium - 1000mg a day. Optimal vitamin D levels - 80ng/ml or 200nmol/l. Vitamin D is cruical to activate the immune system, and clinical trials showed vitamin D with calcium reduced cancer rates by 77%. 5000IU of vitamin D a day is recommended. Magnesium is needed for calcium assimulation and a co-factor for vitamin D. Magnesium deficiency also causes tremors and muscle spasms. 500mg of magnesium a day. As your yelling/being more vocal symptoms occured at the same time, it may well be from these deficiencies.

Problem concerning vitamin b12 deficiency?

Q. I have vitamin b12 deficiency and I heard that it leads to irreversable brain damage. Even after taking the supplement there is no cure. I have memory and other neurological problems. So there is no cure for it?

A. That seems hard to believe. I have not heard it. I have been taking the B12 pills for decades, not problem.

What is the difference between methylmalonic acid and methionine?
Q. The question is about Vitamin B12 deficiency

A. Methionine is an essential amino acids present in humans. Methylmalonic acid is a is a dicarboxylic acid.

The coenzyme A linked form of methylmalonic acid, methylmalonyl-CoA, is converted into succinyl-CoA by methylmalonyl-CoA mutase, in a reaction that requires vitamin B12 as a cofactor. In this way, it enters the Krebs cycle, and is thus part of one of the anaplerotic reactions.

If vegans ate meat would they have to take B12 supplements?
Q. Vitamin B12 is found in meat. If vegans ate meat they wouldn't have to take B12 supplements, would they? That proves being vegan is wrong and not natural. Vitamin B12 deficiency is common among vegans.
Pet, don't lie. You know that vitamin B12 deficiency is common among vegans.

A. For the most part you are correct. But having a vitamin B 12 deficiency is not just overcome by eating meat one or twice. The B 12 does not stay in the system because it is depleted by so many different things. Everything from smoking, drinking to taking drugs the doctor provides depletes you B 12.

Are food companies required to provide vitamin content on packaging?
Q. I have a Vitamin B12 deficiency and read that Clams have a very high B12 content, however, the package of clams I got from the grocery store did not list B12 among its nutritional content. Does this mean that there isn't any B12 or did they just not list it?

A. A lot of packaged and processed foods are depleted of thier natural vitamins and nutrients.
I saw cheese once with zero protein percent! zero....

that was insane to me.

Most foods do not have to put every detail in them or are not reviewed by the fda.

B12 you can get from cow meat, if you are a vegetarian you can take a B complex supplement in pill form. or b-12 pills. I even need extra b vitamins even though I eat lots of food because I ama bodybuilder.

So to answer you sadly no not requiered, some even lie whats in there and more sodium and preservatives than mentioned.

I bought herring once in a plastic pack and it was so discustingly salty I had to spit it out.

take your multivitamin with food and a b 12 vitamin alone.
hope this helps.

all you can do is find a fresh source of clams at a market and see if it gives you more enrey but you can't live on clams.

I have been prescribed 50000unt of vitamin d for twice a week ? How serious is this?

Q. Im 22 and i been looking up symptoms and causes of vitamin d and Im afraid alot of this pertains to me. I just want to know more on vitamin d. It is on the internet but I know some of you have experienced it and can help me answer questions. Any response....

A. The prescription vitamin D supplements are the wrong type (ergocalciferol - vitamin D2). As warned by the National Institute of Health -

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17023693

Luckily you can buy vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) over the counter and the upper limits are extremely high. U.S. RDA are much too low. Current recommendations from researchers are for 35iu per pound - a 150# person needs minimum of 5250iu per day & the rda is 400iu. This amount is for minimal needs and does not replenish depleted stores.

Research published by Grassroots Health from the D*Action study shows the average adult needs to take 8,000 IU's of vitamin D per day in order to elevate their levels above 40ng/ml, which they believe is the absolute minimum for disease prevention.

I have Fibromyalgia -Vitamin D3 supplementation has cleared the constant muscle pain. I did high levels for 3 weeks & was pain free. I knocked the dose down to 2000iu's a day & a week later the pain was back. After restarting high levels, the pain is managed again after 3 days.

I personally did 35,000iu per day for 2 months trying to refill my stores. It is highly recommended that you have your vit.D levels tested but my research shows toxicity only at outrageous, long term levels.

I originally did B12 injections daily for a couple of years & then I tried guaifenesin (Dr.St.Amand's protocol) for 10 years but discovered vit.D3 supplementation last year & that has worked better than anything else!

Vitamin D3 is not a vitamin at all but a necessary hormone that effects the immune system, bones & nearly every aspect of health. Having low Vitamin D levels greatly increases risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, MS & being deficient can create or greatly exacerbate health problems. Many researchers claim that optimized vitamin D levels are more effective than a flu shot in preventing viral infections.

With Vitamin D3 deficiency becoming an epidemic, it is possible that upper atmosphere pollution is blocking the needed UVB light from the sun. Or simply that people are washing daily, if you wash skin exposed to the sun within 48 hours, you wash off the oils where the vitamin D production starts. In northern latitudes (above that of Atlanta, Georgia) the sun is at too low an angle for half the year to provide sufficient UV radiation. If even available, UVB rays are only accessible while the sun is directly overhead. Most people need to take vitamin D, especially seniors, as the ability to synthesize vitamin D in the skin declines with age.

With exposure to sunlight in the summer, the body can generate up to 20,000iu of vitamin D per hour with no ill effects. In addition, no adverse effects have been seen with supplemental vitamin D intakes up to 10,000 IU daily.

Always take your vitamin D with a fat-containing meal to ensure absorption.

http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA400676/More-Vitamin-D.html

I also highly recommend a low carb way of eating for optimal health.

Vitamin D deficiency may contribute to the wide set of disorders associated with metabolic syndrome (syndrome X), as well as to PCOS. In a study published in 2004, the authors saw a 60% improvement in insulin sensitivity in healthy, vitamin D replete adults

http://www.womentowomen.com/healthynutrition/vitamind.aspx

Dr. Joe Prendergast, an endocrinologist /diabetologist has managed over 1500 diabetic patients and, in the last decade, not one of his patients has had a stroke or heart attack. Only one has even been hospitalized! His secret50,000 units of Vitamin D3 daily. Dr. Joe further reports:

* Reversal of advanced coronary disease
* Reversal of advanced lung disease
* Cure of multiple sclerosis
* Cure of amotrophic lateral sclerosis
* Regression of rheumatoid arthritis
* Improvement in allergies
* Control of many cancers
* Reversal of osteoporosis
* Prevention of influenza
* Cure of depression & other mental disorders
* Hashimotos hyperthyroidism

In summary, the evidence for safety and remarkable efficacy of Vitamin D3 suggests that virtually ALL adults should probably take 50,000 units of D3 daily. This is certainly true for those with virtually any illness.

Muscle spasms, twitching, pain and aches after suffering from vitamin D deficiency?
Q. Its been 5 months that i have started the supplements but still get all the above symptoms...With excessive fatigue,
Is it just related to my Vitamin D,Is it fibro or is it anxiety..
How do i differentiate between anxiety and fibro
Thanks in advance

A. You better get your doctor to answer this . Fibro is a multitude of deficiencies and sickness combined .

What affects does a severe deficiency of vitamin D have on the body? And can you take vitamin D IV?
Q. my vitamin D level is 23.. I have been on vitamin D supplements for almost 5 months and it continues to drop. Now I am suffereing weakness, muscle weakness, bone pain, chest shortness of breath, etc.

A. What form of vitamin D supplements are you taking? and how much are you taking?

First, you should be taking cholecalciferol (NOT ergocalciferol).

Second, if you are as deficient as it sounds, you should be taking MASSIVE doses (at least 100,000 IU per day).

Third, do you have a malabsorption problem? Vitamin D is fat soluble, consequently it may not be well absorbed if you have pancreatic insufficiency, gall-bladder dysfunction, or common types of malabsorption disorders such as Celiac Disease.

Lastly, why is your doctor not giving you vitamin D injections?

The symptoms you describe are consistent with severe vitamin D deficiency. You need effective treatment ASAP. If your doctor cannot/will not help, get a referral to a specialist or find a new doctor.

Best wishes and good luck.

Is profuse sweating a symptom of Vitamin D deficiency or something else?
Q. I was recently diagnosed as Vitamin D deficient and am now taking supplements, but I was wondering if my symptoms: profuse sweating (esp. on my face), depressed moods, and irregular menstrual cycles could be something else?

A. You should test your thyroid levels to make sure you are not hyperthyroid. You should also take Vitamin D supplements if you are deficient and get your blood level to around 50

What can go wrong with a diet of a 400 cal a day?
Q. I'm trying to hit ketosis. I take a multivitamin daily and a weekly prescription for a Vitamin D deficiency. I know it puts me in starvation mode, but my diet is fulled of nutrients and I'm going to stick with it. But what are symptoms of I guess a Obese Anorexic ? or my diet gone wrong? Is it really bad for an obese person to starve themselves? Because can't they live of the extra fat?

Thanks

A. I'll share my experience with Vitamin d. I was feeling extremely run down, tired, no energy, depression etc and I had always been a get up and go type person with loads of energy and never depressed. My blood test showed my vitamin D level was almost non existant so I started on Vitamin D3. I took five 1,000 IU pills a day for the first 10 days then I took three pills a day for the next 2 months and now I take 1-2 pills every day. With in the first 4-5 days I felt alot better it felt as though the fog had lifted and I could see clearer. Over the next few months I am back to my old self I feel younger again with more energy and enthusiasum for life. I think my Vitamin D levels had gone down over a few years and I was putting my lack of energy and haziness down to getting older but when I began to feel really run down I went to my doctor for some answers. I had every blood test known to man and the only thing that came back as odd or low was the Vit D. Its amazing what the lack of this one vitamin can do to your life. I also now go outside alot more like I did when I was younger and get the original source of Vitamin D from the sun as much as possible. Side effects: absolutely no side effect, except I now feel one million times better. Highly recommended this vitamin. I purchase Vitamin d through reputable http://www.gofmanpharmacy.com/ they've been very reliable so far. Check this FDA link about Vitamin d http://google2.fda.gov/search?client=FDAgov&site=FDAgov-Recalls-Safety|FDAgov-Consumers|FDAgov-WarningLetters-ICECI|FDAgov-ImportAlerts-Industry|FDAgov-MedWatch-Safety|FDAgov-Section-Drugs&output=xml_no_dtd&proxystylesheet=FDAgov&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&as_q=vitamin+d&num=20&btnG=Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&restrictBox=FDAgov-Recalls-Safety&restrictBox=FDAgov-Consumers&restrictBox=Medwatch&restrictBox=FDAgov-WarningLetters-ICECI&restrictBox=FDAgov-ImportAlerts-Industry&restrictBox=FDAgov-Section-Drugs&lr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&sort=date

anyone know symptoms of vitamin b12 deficiency?

Q. i've been really tired lately and losing weight, i weigh around 99lbs. i used to weigh 125lbs. i get really shakey and need to carry food with me. i get out of breath.and my hair is getting so dry and thin. i've said something to my doctor about the weight and he said you look fine, but i don't think it's normal to lose weight for no reason and i just don't feel well and i look awful too. i know taking medicine for reflux can cause vitamin b12 deficiency and i take nexium for years.

A. Sudden unexplained weight loss should always be investigated to find out the cause, especially if you also feel tired and shaky. Your doctor will want to check you for diabetes, overactive thyroid gland, hidden infections, and other causes of weight loss. He or she will probably arrange blood tests and a chest x-ray. Don't put off going - the sooner the cause is found, the sooner you can be treated and on the way to recovery.

Sometimes weight loss can be a sign of a depressive illness, and your doctor will want to know how you are feeling emotionally. In the meantime, try to eat a healthy diet. It can help to keep a food diary for a few days to see exactly what you are eating. Healthy between-meal-snacks such as fruit, muesli, smoked salmon sandwiches, and cheese can help you put on weight. High-carb foods such as rice, pasta and bread are also a good idea. good luck

How do I avoid the vitamin k injection and the vaccines the hospital gives newborns at birth?

Q. How do I know the hospital will respect my wishes and not vaccinate or inject my newborn with vitamin K?

A. Why would you want to avoid it? The vitamin K injection is important because newborn babies have very little vitamin K. A small proportion of babies suffer bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency (VKDB). Giving a vitamin K injection prevents this problem.

While VKDB is rare it can cause bleeding from the nose and mouth or into the brain. You won't always be able to see this bleeding. It can lead to brain damage or even death. While there are certain factors that increase the risk of bleeding, it isn't always possible to identify high or low risk babies so the injection is a good idea.

Some parents are concerned over the vitamin K injection at birth due to the concerns over childhood cancer that were raised by some studies in the early 90s but other studies have NOT confirmed this.

HepB at birth you could actually skip and give later. A newborn unlikely produces any response to it.

in what ways can you get more vitamin k? why is it good for you?
Q. what does vitamin k give you? how can you get more? for example, what types of foods or drink increase vitamin k? what types of problems can it help?

A. Vitamin K is essential for clotting the blood.
It also plays a role in ensuring the health of bones.
Food sources of vitamin k include cabbage, spinach, soybeans, lettuce, canola oil, and margarine.

Some deficiencies of vitamin k Include:

Heavy menstrual bleeding*
Gastrointestinal bleeding
Hematuria (blood in the urine)
Nosebleeds
Eye hemorrhages
Anemia
Gum bleeding
Prolonged clotting times
Hematomas
Hemorrhaging
Ovarian Hemorrhaging
Easy bruising

Prolonged consumption of megadoses of vitamin K (menadione) results in anemia, which is a reduced level of red blood cells in the bloodstream. When large doses of menadione are given to infants, they result in the deposit of pigments in the brain, nerve damage, the destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis), and death. A daily injection of 10 mg of menadione into an infant for three days can kill the child. This tragic fact was discovered during the early days of vitamin research, when newborn infants were injected with menadione to prevent a disease known as hemorrhagic disease of the newborn. Today a different form of vitamin K is used to protect infants against this disease.

Are there any nutrients or vitamins that are dangerous to have too much of?
Q. Besides vitamin K and iron, are there any other nutrients or vitamins that it is too dangerous to have too much of? I take a multi vitamin daily and try to get plenty of vitamins in my diet. I want to make sure that there isn't any danger of having too much of one thing.

A. Calcium actually. And if you take/eat a lot of calcium, make sure you have just as much Vitamin D in your system. Calcium is hard to absorb without D and can lead to kidney stones. Magnesium and Phoshorus also aren't good to have too much of. Some vitamins though, like Vitamin C, you can have up to 300% of the Daily Value in one day and be fine. (My boyfriend tried those "Smoke Away" pills for quitting smoking. He needed to take 3 pills 3 times a day, and each dose was 300% Vitamin C. So he was getting 900% of the DV each day for 3 weeks and nothing happened to him. So Vitamin C isn't much to worry about either. Although I don't suggest you take that much for very long unless you need to.) -By the way, the Smoke Away pills DID work, but only for a short period of time until the little pills that you take when you get a craving ran out, then he went back to smoking again. Just in case you were wondering lol.

Don't worry too much about overdosing on Vitamin K and Iron because you might end up getting too little and that's not good either. You need at least 50% of the Daily Value of them or you can start feeling fatigued and getting cramps (especially leg cramps which are most associated with Potassium (K) deficiencies). Potassium is water-soluble though, so if you drink a lot of water, it washes out of your system faster and you need more of it. But if you only drink about 8 glasses or less of water per day, aim for 100% of the DV in a day.

Iron is also neccessary to keep your blood thick and healthy. Too much iron won't really HURT you either, per se. My ex once took 6 times the DV of iron by accident before donating blood (he read it as 100mg being 18% instead of 18mg being 100%) and took 6 iron pills to get over the 100% level lol! He was fine, his blood was just really "heavy" as the nurse explained. They still accepted it though. It's probably not good to do that very often though, so be careful.

Any good vitamin E brands out there you recommend?

Q. I have severely dry cracked skin especially on my feet... not sure if I'm vitamin e deficient but I want to try taking vitamin E supplements to help remedy my skin condition. Do you think this is advisable? If so, what brands can you recommend?

A. If your skin problem was caused by a lack of vitamin E then it wouldn't only affect your feet. It would affect your skin all over.
Vitamin E deficiency symptoms include anemia, caratacts, neurological damage and abnormalities of the liver, brain and bone marrow. These are all quite serious problems. If you do not have them then you are not vitamin E deficient.
The main cause of cracked skin on the feet is excessively dry skin because the feet have no oil glands.
Try E45 cream. I find it very soothing and it is easily available.

Is it possible to treat vit B12 deficiency without taking suppliments, ie. only through dietary changes?
Q. I have been a vegetarian for last 10 years and an occasional drinker. Lately i am experiencing many b12 deficiency symptoms - tingling in hands/legs, chapped lips, canker sores, fatigue, drowsiness etc. I have started eating 2 eggs and drinking one litre milk daily. Is it possible to treat it this way or should I get vitamin capsules?

A. Go to the doctors first and ask for a blood test to confirm you are deficient in B12. The most reliable sources of B12 can be found in yeast extract, nutritional yeast flakes (e.g Engevital) fortified soya products such as dairy free margarine and dairy free milks and breakfast cereals.
It is a misconception that vegans cannot get B12 from their diet, i have never needed to take supplements but some vegans choose to take a 10 microgram B12 supplement daily.

Is it safe to take a multivitamin and vitamin E in one day?
Q. the multivitamin contains 30 IU and the vitamin E 400 IU.
Is it too much for one day?

A. No, not at all, remember that the "suggested daily dose" or whatever is just enough to keep from getting severe deficiency symptoms like scurvy, not necessarily enough for your optimum health. With vitamin there's lots of room.
That's true about niacin, never overdue it!

What are the effects of taking a lot of vitamin c supplements?
Q. I have these jars with 150 tabs of vitamin c, 500mg each. I take several at a time throughout the day because it makes me feel really good and happy and tastes really good. It's like a drug to me. Is taking extreme amounts of vitamin c supplements bad for you?

A. Yes potentially.
I would seriously advise against doing so.
As a maintenance dose then 250-500mg is really a maximum ideal to aim for.
If you have a cold or flu then that can be increased temporarily to 1000mg but should be reduced back down to a maintenance dose after recovery.

Though vitamin C is not stored, in high doses it is not without its potential problems, which may include: gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), bleeding gums, decreased wound-healing, easy bruising, nosebleeds, weakened tooth enamel, swollen and painful joints, anaemia**, a decreased ability to fight an infection, a slowing of the metabolism that may lead to weight gain, rough, dry, scaly skin and/ or splitting hair.
[from ref: Medline Plus, link: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002404.htm ]

** regarding anaemia however, if one was to supplement with iron, one may have the opposite scenario.....i.e. too much iron stored, which could be a problem, particularly in anyone with haemochromatosis [an iron storage disease] or with a genetic tendency towards it [i.e. it was in the family].

There is also a risk of kidney stone formation in those with a tendency.

So basically, toxic levels of vitamin C in the blood over time [that may occur from taking mega doses regularly] could lead to symptoms ordinarily characteristic of a vitamin C deficiency. Such symptoms may also become apparent [even if you did not have these symptoms when taking high doses] if you were to stop taking it suddenly.

Wean yourself off the high doses in stages so you don't display scurvy symptoms. And after this, take no more than 250-500mg a day as a maintenance dose.

Be safe, be well....insha'Allah.
Best wishes.

What is a list of easily-grown natural foods which will contain all you need to live?

Q. Obviously Bread (grain) is not sufficient, as you will die from scurvy (Vitamin C deficiency) and a lot of other issues.

Say there are no more grocery stores and you need to grow your own food. What will you eat?

EXAMPLE LIST (not a real list, just an example so you understand what I'm asking):
* beans
* peppers
* tomatoes
* rice
* grains
* nuts
* etc.
The Irish ate more than JUST potatoes.

A. If I had to grow my own food I would have:

- Potatoes, onions, carrots (easy to grow, easy to store throughout winter, and potatoes provide carbs without needing to bother with grains which are more of a hassle ie you need a mill etc etc)
- Pumpkin and marrows (VERY easy to grow and also to collect seeds for next season, also provides late autumn vitamin C)
- Fruit trees (which kind would depend on where I was, but for example apples, pears, cherries)
- Garlic (good for you, tastes nice, and also keeps pests off other crops, which since there are no grocery stores in this scenario means there will also be nowhere to buy pesticides)
- Tomatoes (various varieties that can be grown throughout the summer and also lots of nutrients)
- Cabbages (I don't really like them, but it's one of the only ways to get vit C in winter other than stored root vegetables)
- Animals for protein, probably something relatively fecund like guinea pigs/rabbits and also normal pigs (I don't think I could live without bacon). Maybe goats as well, they're pretty hardy and they will eat anything.
- Chickens for eggs (more protein)
- Bees for honey (source of sugar) and also to pollinate the fruit trees
- A cow for milk

Is it possible to bake a loaf of bread around an orange?
Q. My friend has a serious vitamin c deficiency, get sick all the time, and loves bread of all kinds. For her birthday we usually get her a really nice loaf of bread along w/other things. It's coming up on her birthday and she's sick yet again. This year we wanted to play a bit of a prank on her by baking whole oranges into bread. If there is anyway this is possible I'd love to know. It doesn't necessarily need to be edible either, but if it was, it would help.

A. It is edible,if you have organic oranges.Wash them and form the dough around them so that they are completely covered.I'd bake on some degrees lower temperature than usual because otherwise the juice inside the orange might cook and they'd burst.Bread will get a slight taste of orange. But it's not really fair to play a prank on someone who's ill.Why not buy her dozens of packs hot lemon or vitamin pills? You can get it in the health section of supermarkets,it's a somehow disappointing present, too, but much less work.

can i give my baby vitamin c and multivite supplement at 5months old?
Q. my baby is just 5months old and i understand that vitamin c deficiency can cause impare mental growth?

A.

If cholestoral is so bad for you, how come the body produces it?
Q. A vitamin C deficiency leads to a breakdown in the arterial walls, due to a lack of repair options. The liver produces cholestoral to plug the cracks, so blood doesn't start leaking through the coronary artery walls. So why is cholestoral considered bad when it's saving your life?

A. You've hit on an important topic, because there is some research coming out now, that seems to indicate our thinking on this has been backward;

it is a MARKER for something bad happening, but it's not actually the CAUSE of the problem.

In other words, yes, high levels in your bloodstream are connected to heart disease, etc., but that doesn't mean it's causative.
So, to take Statins, etc., to cut down on the levels, may be actually harming you.

And you're a bit off on the Vitamin C thing; yes, SCURVY causes the lesions you're talking about, but that is not 'mild' Vitamin C deficiency, that is ACUTE deficiency.
Eating too much saturated fats, and not exercising enough is by far the biggest causes of lesions inside your arteries.

And taking megadoses of Vitamin C has not been proven to help anyone in any way, incidentally.

What are some eye creams/treatments that I should use to prevent dark circles and eye bags?

Q. I'm 22 yrs old. I have eye bags and I don't want them to get any bigger or deeper.

A. to get rid of dark circles:

1. get plenty of sleep nightly. for one thing, lack of sleep tends to cause the skin to become paler (thus increasing the appearance of darkness under the eyes), and it reduces circulation. its also believed that too little time lying down is a cause in itself. determine how much sleep you need (its usually 7-9 hours per night, but varies throughout different people) and try to get that amount regularly for a couple of weeks to see if that helps. remember that alcohol and drugs can adversely affect the quality of your sleep; abstain from these products or use only in moderation for best results.

2. establish whether or not this condition runs in your family. dark circles are believed to frequently be hereditary. this doesnt mean that you cant do anything about the conditions, but you should be prepared for minimal success actually trying to get rid of them. dark circles under the eye may also, in fact, be light carbon deposits that result from incomplete protein digestion. incomplete protein digestion may result from insufficient hydrochloric acid in your stomach that may be caused from a lack of primarily b6 and folic acid. about 30% of the population does not absorb regular b6 (pydroxine) or folic acid and need to take in these vitamins in a different form or another way.

3. identify allergens. allergies may be the most common cause of skin discoloration under the eyes. if allergies are the root of your problem, you simply need to treat them or remove the allergen (the thing to which you are allergic). seasonal allergy problems such as the hay fever can frequently be effectively treated with over-the-counter and prescription medications. for other allergies the best course of action is usually avoidance. if your dark circles or puffiness are constant, you may have an undetected food allergy or an allergy to a chemical in your home or workplace. talk to a dermatologist for help determining what you may be allergic to. people with allergies also tend again to be deficient in b6, folic acid. taking a multivitamin, if you don't already, may help with your allergies as well as black circles.

4. treat your skin while you sleep. there are overnight facial masques available that may help reduce the appearance of puffiness or discoloration, but you can also make your own. just before you go to bed, take a washcloth and wet it just a bit with cold water. then squeeze out any excess water and place it over your eyes as you sleep.

5. apply cool tea bags, an ice cube wrapped in soft cloth, or cucumber slices to your eyes daily. the tannin in tea bags has been shown to reduce swelling and discoloration, and cucumber slices have long been used to reduce puffiness and refresh the appearance of skin around the eyes. lie down, preferably in the morning, and leave fresh cucumber slices or cool, damp caffeinated tea bags (you can refrigerate them overnight so theyll be ready) over your eyes for about 10-15 minutes. keep your eyes closed.

6. try to relax the space. you can do this by wetting a cotton swab and then freezing it for a little while. then you should gently wipe under your eyes in the areas where the circles are occurring. when wiping, close your eyes and try not to flinch.

7. apply an eye cream containing vitamin k and retinol. research has shown that skin creams containing these two ingredients reduce puffiness and discoloration significantly in many patients. long-term daily use seems to have the greatest effect.

8. avoid rubbing your eyes. usually rubbing of the eyes is brought on by allergies, but not always. regardless of the reason, stop doing it. the rubbing irritates the skin and can break tiny capillaries beneath the skin, causing both puffiness and discoloration.

9. eat a healthy, balanced diet and drink plenty of water. a whole host of cosmetic problems can be attributed to vitamin deficiencies. be sure to get plenty of fruits and vegetablesespecially cabbage, spinach, and other leafy green vegetables. get adequate fluids to improve circulation.

10. reduce salt intake. excess salt causes the body to retain water in unusual places, and this can result in puffiness under the eyes. too much salt can also impair your circulation, and cause the blood vessels under the skin to appear bluer.

11. if you smoke- then quit. smoking causes vascular (blood vessel) problems that can not only threaten your life, but also make your blood vessels appear more prominent and bluer beneath the skin.

12. if this doesnt work try covering the problem up with cosmetics. use a yellow or flesh-toned colour which will camouflage the problem under your eyes. mac do the best ones for covering up dark circles although they are a bit expensive. if you are on a budget i would definately reccomend rimmel. good luck

hope this helps

what is the best way to get dark circles out under the eyes?
Q. Im young and have dark circles under my eyes> anybody have any remedies or products that are cheap and are popluar and widley used that work?

A. Hi! Dude. You just worry for dark circle .Don't worry my best friend had same problem but now he looks more charming than before.
I will suggest you both causes and Herbs that remove Dark circle-

It is a known fact that aging causes dark circles under the eyes. This is partly a result of the thinning of the skin which surrounds the eyes and causes the veins to show through. Aging also causes loss of fat and collagen around the eyes, eventually leading to dark circles under the eyes.

Heredity is one of the causes for dark under eye circles. It might be surprising to know, but this problem is sometimes passed on from one generation to another.

The structure of the bones is another cause for dark circles. Deep-set eyes might have a shadowed appearance which resembles under-eyes circles.
Hyperpigmentation is also another reason that might cause dark circles under the eyes. Since the skin around the eyes is very sensitive, too much exposure to the sun might lead to under eye circles; as a result of excess pigmentation.

Certain lifestyle factors, such as stress, lack of sleep, excessive smoking or alcohol consumption, etc might also lead to dark circles.

Certain medical conditions like allergies, asthma, nasal congestion, circulatory problems, vitamin K deficiency, dehydration, nutritional deficiencies, or kidney and liver disorders might also cause dark under eye circles.

Herbs such as parsley, sage, chamomile and mint provide effective treatment for dark under eye circles.

Extract fresh mint juice and gently dab it on the eye area and then allow it to dry.

Mix finely chopped parsley and sage along with two tablespoons of sour cream and then apply this mixture under the eyes. Allow this to stay on for about 20 to 30 minutes.

Cover the eye area using chamomile tea bags that have been soaked in cold water for a couple of minutes. Keep these tea bags over the eyes for around 10 to 15 minutes.

Mix a tablespoon of milk and nutmeg and stir it well. After this, apply the blend to the eye area prior to going to sleep at night. Dont wash off the milk and nutmeg.

Herbal pastes:

Some herbal pastes are very effective in treating under eye circles. All the pastes mentioned below involve the same directions after application. Allow the paste to stay on the eye area for around 20 minutes or until it dries up and then wash it off.

Prepare a paste by combining neem, ginseng, papaya, sandalwood, mint and almond oil.
Make a paste with pineapple juice and turmeric. You could also make a paste from tomato juice, turmeric, lentils, and lemon juice.

A paste made from sandalwood and rosewater is also used for treating dark circles.

These are some herbal remedies for dark patches or circles under the eyes.Use my tips get remove your dark circles. However, it is always better to consult a doctor or dermatologist before using the remedies mentioned above.

How to get rid of a bruise on a vein?
Q. I started volleyball a few days ago, and we've been doing a lot of bumping. On the inside of my wrist, I have a bruise running down the middle from volleyball. It's right on the vein. What can I do to help get rid of it?
Thanks!

A. * Vitamin K. Take Vitamin K or alfalfa in tablets helps blood clotting.

* Vitamin C. Take Vitamin C to prevent bruising by thickening the walls of blood vessels.

* Vitamin E. Vitamin E works synergistically with vitamin C to repair tissues.

* Zinc. Zinc is helpful in maintaining healthy connective tissue, and a deficiency can lead to bruising. Take 50-100 mg daily. However, don't take doses this high for more than a week or two without medical supervision, as it may interfere with absorption of other important minerals, especially copper.

* Mustard. Make a poultice of mustard and apply to the bruise. It will draw the blood away from the bruise. Combine 2 parts of ground mustard seed with one part set honey and one part finely chopped onion. Apply to the bruised area and cover with a bandage. This will relieve the bruise and swelling.

* Onions. Make a poultice of roasted onions and apply to the bruise.Cut an onion, dip it in apple cider vinegar and rub on the bruise as soon after it occurs as possible to prevent black and blue marks.

* Pepper. Applying black pepper oil to the bruise will also draw the blood away from it.

* Vinegar. Make a compress and soak it in vinegar to alleviate the bruise and swelling. Avoid getting it in the eyes.

* Cayenne pepper & Vaseline. Chinese people use a mixture of 1 part cayenne pepper and 5 parts melted Vaseline, mix and cool, apply once a day.

* Confrey root or Buchu. Make a tea with confrey root or buchu. soak a rag in the tea and apply to bruised area, this has been shown to reduce pain and discoloration of the skin.

* Arnica. To alleviate dark, swollen bruises, apply a gel containing arnica every three hours to encourage healing. Or, apply a tincture or cream to the affected area. Arnica traditionally has been used for muscle aches, sprains and bruises. The gel should improve the swelling, stiffness and discoloration. Some people have a reaction to arnica, so if your skin becomes red, itchy or inflamed, discontinue use.

* Parsley. Parsley is another herb which has abundant supply of vitamins and works as a therapeutic treatment for the wound. Apply crushed parsley on the bruised area. Keep doing this till the blue or black marks disappear forever.

* Witch Hazel. Having a soothing bath with Witch Hazel helps in circulation of the blood and in the healing process. The astringent, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic attribute just makes it a great home remedy.

* Cabbage. Cabbage contains anti-inflammatory properties which applied in emaciated form on bruises or swelling can help the healing procedure. -Arnica works great for bruises or sprains. It has wonderful and useful properties to provide healing touch to your wounds. Use few drops of arnica tincture in a cup of water, soak a clean cloth and apply this cloth for bandaging.

* St. Johns Wort - St. Johns Wort is known to have done wonders for bruises. The anti-bacterial and astringent properties make it apt for treating them. -Add few drops of St. John Wort tincture to an organic oil or cream and apply it on the bruised area. The skin would absorb the tincture which would help the healing process.

I wanna know if there is any treatments for the inherited black circles around the eye.?
Q. I hate using make up and I hope if there is anyway to make these circles go a way,can any bleaching creams help me?I heared about such creams and I wanna know if they will help me even if that was a temporary treatment.
And is there is any surgery for the skin under the eyes as a teatment for the darck circles?

A. Tru Karma seems a bit too hasty... I don't think she even knows what Iron deficiency is. When you get Iron deficiency you'll exemplify a bluish tint under your eyes, not dark black circles. Black circles under the eyes can be inherited...

Anyways... Here are some treatments that I found. I wouldn't recommend cream. Foreign goop is never good to apply to your skin, which is so delicate and absorbent.

1. Be sure to drink enough water. Hydration Calculator: How much water do you need?

2. Wear sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 under the eyes to prevent skin weakening caused by sun damage.

3. Get plenty of rest.

4. Apply plain cool teabags over closed eyes. Dont use herbal teabags, because most aren't as effective.

5. Apply cool cucumber slices over closed eyes for 15 minutes.

6. Be careful not to consume too much dietary salt. Start by learning about sources of sodium in the diet.

7. Apply vitamin K cream. Although studies haven't looked at the use of topical vitamin K for dark circles under the eyes, preliminary studies have found that vitamin K may help with bruising.

8. Vitamin C helps to strengthen blood vessel walls.

9. The dietary supplements grape seed extract and pycnogenol contain antioxidant pigments that may help to strengthen blood vessels. They should be used under medical supervision by people on "blood-thinning" drugs such as Coumadin (warfarin) and aspirin.

Certain foods, such as cranberries, blueberries, bilberries, tea (green and black), black currant, onions, legumes, and parsley also contain these antioxidant pigments.

10. Eat kidney-balancing foods. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, a bluish cast under the eyes are due to an imbalance in kidney energy.

What are the importance of taking folic acid and vitamin B complex at the age of 50 years and above?

Q. I am asking this question because i was advised by my doctor to regulary take vitamin tablets

A. life extension has some great multivitamin/mineral tablets...my friend is now 70, he takes them, and looks about 45 or 50. Taking poorly mixed amounts of vitamins and minerals is not good either, so if your going to take something, I'd do life extension. There is a lot of research and study necessary for you to know what they know about relationships and interrelationships, there is no B vitamin on the market with enough folic acid in it...and they can increase your need for the ones undersupplied and actually cause a deficiency. If you are deficient in folic acid you will know because you will get out of breath when you walk up stairs...and larger amounts can only be got by prescription or in Canada...it s in leafy green vegetables. Not that it's dangerous, unless your a strict vegetarian, and you don't take your B-12, and get pernicious anemia, and are taking folic acid, folic acid will mask the symptoms of pernicious anemia, so they took it away from all of us in any amounts will do anything, and is very bad for the babies to be undersupplied on this vitamin. Also a lot of multivitamin/mineral have iron in them, which I am totally against...since it destroys your vitamin E which protects your vitamin A and constipates you...they trying to get us used to doctors telling us take vitamins cuz they want to make them by perscrition only, therefore getting all the money and having us depend on our health 100% on doctors...itsbig now doctors telling everyone they need vitamin D-3, doctors have no training in nutrition, ie, how foods are broken down in your body and how the nutrients are used to make and keep you young and healthy, and if they are taught this, the schools lose their grants..ask your doc what training he had in this! lol.if you want to learn about it easy and fun buy a used copy of lets eat right to keep fit, by Adelle Davis...she saved my life when the doctors couldn't and I have lived off her information without going to doctors for 33 years, except once when I had to have surgery...she also wrote lets get well, both fully documented, lets eat right to keep fit telling you why, lets get well telling you what to do...their so fascinating I couldn't set them down till I read them3 times and took notes from them twice! My girlfriend raised her children on the information (supplied by me!) lol, and never had to take them to the doctors, we even stopped a nosebleed that was real bad in 4 minutes!! Sorry, I know this is more than you asked for, But Adelle Davis inspired a passion in me, changed my life forever for the better, and there is so much to learn about this, one sentence, could barely tell you anything! Good luck, here's to your health! and that you live forever! If you can find the question just above... she wants to go to counselling, for cutting herself, and her mom wants her to take vitamins...I copied some of the first paragraph of Adelle's book for her, its so neat! in my answer.

Has anyone had success with Immunical or B12 injections for Multiple Sclerosis?
Q. If not, what have you had success with when it comes to treating symptoms related to walking, etc?

A. When I have paralysis I take steroids. For the general weakness and clumsiness, I don't take anything, I just adapt.

There are several clinical trials at various stages studying antibiotic therapy and MS (Vitamins D3 and E). They are in stage Phase I and II. Phase I tests a new drug/treatment on a small group to evaluate its safety, determine safe dosage range, and identify side effects.
In Phase II, the study drug or treatment is given to a larger group to see if it is effective and to further evaluate its safety.

A good neurologist should rule out a Vitamin B12 deficiency before they diagnose you with MS. They may also check your B12 level periodically when you are having flairs. If your B12 level is normal, you do not need a supplement. Here is a link for info on vitamins, minerals, and herbs:

What is folic acid ? Does it really help to prevent a heart attack ?
Q. Give alternatiave names of folic acid i.e. local or country names. Also tell in what food items the folic acid is present. How much folic acid do I need as daily intake. I am 56 and 186 pounds, with sligh B.P. problem.

A. Folic acid is a B vitamin, I think it is B8. Also called Folacin, and the natural form in foods is Folate. It is essential for the synthesis of DNA. Deficiency symptoms are constipation, anemia, slowed metabolism, fatigue, depression. Deficiency also can cause birth defects. Best sources include liver, green leafy vegetables, especially spinach, broccoli, peanuts. We typically need 4-600 micrograms (.4 - .6 milligrams) daily, but for people with high blood levels of homocycteine doctors usually recommend 800mcg or more. Yes, folic acid does help prevent a heart attack by reducing the homocycteine which greatly facilitates buildup of plaque in the arteries. B vitamins work together, so your doctor will probably want you to supplement your intake of B12 and B6. There is an Rx form called Foltx, but it might not have enough 12 and 6. Some people think that Folate, the natural form in foods, is much better than Folic Acid. It also is available in a supplement. Be sure to talk to your doctor first before beginning any B vitamin supplements. Also, if you take a multiple vitamin, check its contents, many include 400mcg of folic acid. Be careful of what you might read on the internet. There's at least one site that confused milligrams with grams.

What would happen if I took all three dietary pills together?
Q. I want to know what would happen to my body if I took my Vitamin tablets, Omega 3 tablets and Super enzyme tablets together? Would it be extremely bad for my body due to hypervitaminosis or too much concentration?
Death is too far fetched but are there any other serious threats?
Thanks in advance

A. (Heres the end of my answer...)

Vitamins (and minerals) are good for you but too much of a good thing can become a bad thing.

Death, being the toxicity symptom of excessive intake of vitamins usually only applies to iron and only when popping iron supplements or multi-vitamins containing iron, like theyre candies, by unsupervised kids who got access to vitamins that are not in child proof containers and mistook them for candies.
If you ask me, vitamins supplements containing iron should be in child proof containers. Other multi-vitamins pills should not contain iron. Nobody whos eating a healthy diet needs iron supplements (one cup of beans or half a cup of prune juice would cover half of my daily need). I do not eat cereals but that would cover twice my daily need...just for breakfast!
Iron supplement should be separate and prescribed by a doctor, like for pregnant women (who would better hide their stash from their other kids).

Depending on which specific vitamins to which youre referring, toxicity symptoms can give you annoying headaches (A, D), nausea and/or vomiting (A, Selenium, Zinc), heartburn, diarrhea (B5, C, Selenium), intestinal irritation (Selenium, Zinc), loss of appetite (A, D), joint pain (A), dry skin/hair + cracked lips (A), skin rash, vascular dilatation (= red face...Niacin), irritability (Selenium), fatigue/weakness (D, Selenium), numbness (B6), water retention (B5, Sodium), high blood pressure (Sodium), hair loss (A), weakened immune system (Zinc) and really more than annoying kidney stone (C, Calcium), ulcers (Niacin), liver damage (A, Niacin), congestive heart failure and cardiac arrest (Potassium)and this is nothing compared to what they can do when combined with drugs and medicines.

Some high dose of vitamins are not that bad, like vitamin E (you need separate supplements to get some benefits as you would never be able to get enough from the food), but then it interferes with vitamin K (blood-clotting) so should only be prescribed by a doctor (even if you buy them OTC). Then do not be surprised if you dont clot that fast when you cut yourself...and stop taking them 2 weeks before surgery.

ALWAYS have the complete list of all the vitamin supplements (+ meds and drugs) you take ON YOU AT ALL TIME, so if you get into an accident and end up in the hospital, they will know what medicine NOT to give you so some vitamin does not interfere with it in a way that you can see your story later on the TV show House, MD!

Just having a regular check up with your doctor, or because youre sick and they will want to know exactly which vitamins you take and also exactly which dosage and whenas to not prescribe you the wrong medicine. Youll have to fill out a form and dont forget to list any vitamins you take or you wont be able to sue them if you get a bad reaction from some drugs they gave you, because you did not list that particular vitamin you took.

You have a lot of huge, big hundreds of pages books, devoted to vitamins, herbs and drugs interaction, maybe buy one of those.

Every years, kids die because they overdosed on vitamin supplements that they found in the kitchen or in their baby sitters purse and they thought were candies (some are sugary coated and taste good). I have a calcium supplement (when I run out of milk) that is pink, sweet and tastes like a hard nice candy that lasts for a long time, yummy. Make sure your vitamins are 100% inaccessible from any kids in your house.

What are the toxicity symptoms of iron? Death!
Kids mostly die because they accidentally have access to illegal drugs that were not in child proof pharmaceutical containers (coke-head parents tend to kill their kids that way).
The problem is that people, who live a healthy life, do not think that vitamins containing iron can kill a child if s/he takes excessive intake, eating them like they were candies (unsupervised kids often get into shenanigans).

On the bright side, deficiency symptoms are worse than toxicity symptoms (except in the case of iron which causes death).
Deficiency symptoms cause night blindness, xerophthalmia, hyperkeratosis, depression, beriberi, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (mental confusion, amnesia, muscular incoordination), hypochondria, burning and itching of the eyes, sensitivity to light, infertility, anemia, epilepsy, dermatitis, anorexia, glossitis, scurvy, bruises, rickets, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, impaired growth, damage to the brain and spinal cord, constipation, caries (lack of fluoride), mental retardation, enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter), abnormalities in heart rhythm, coma, pellagra (dermatitis, diarrhea an dementia), bone loss and pain, drowsiness and irrational behavior, cardiomyopathy, muscular discomfort and cramps...

When you know all that, you just want to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Youll have to fill out a form and dont forget to list any vitamins you take or you wont be able to sue them if you get a bad reaction from some drugs they gave you, because you did not list that particular vitamin you took.

my husband has a vitamin b 12 deficiency and he abuses oxycontin, how does this all effect his system?

Q. my husband has a vitamin b 12 deficiency, he receives injections weekly but he also abuses marijuana and a drug called oxycontin. How will all of this affect his system??

A. 1) Oxycontin won't destroy your brain. Wake up.
2) Both these drugs won't really effect his deficiency in a real dangerous way
3) Are you sure he's abusing them, or not just taking them medically.
4) That is all

Is it dangerous for a person to take vitamin B-12 injections?
Q. A friend of my is taking vitamin B-12 injections for stress management. Is this a health risk?

A. It is only advisable to take B12 injections if you are deficient in this vitamin. Deficiency in B12 can make you very sick. Has she/he had a blood test?

How long does it take Vitamin B-12 to be absorbed into my system?
Q. After research as to my lack of energy lately, I came across a few people who suggested taking Vitamin B-12 as it is responsible for energy metabolisim and I may be deficient. After reading some blogs and the packaging on the actual vitamins I decided to go with the sublingul (under the tongue) form as it is abosrbed into my system faster. I am taking the reccommended dosage once a day and It is working beautifuly although I'm wondering if I am feeling energy when I do because the Vitamin kicks in or if it's a placibo effect. Does anybody know how long it takes to be absorbed...minutes...hours...your response is much appreciated.

A. Physiology of Absorption, Metabolism, and Excretion

Following ingestion, absorption of thiamin occurs mainly in the jejunum, at lower concentrations as an active, carrier-mediated system involving phosphorylation and at higher concentrations by passive diffusion. Thiamin is transported in blood both in erythrocytes and plasma.

Only a small percentage of a high dose of thiamin is absorbed, and elevated serum values result in active urinary excretion of the vitamin (Davis et al., 1984). After an oral dose of thiamin, peak excretion occurs in about 2 hours, and excretion is nearly complete after 4 hours (Levy and Hewitt, 1971; Morrison and Campbell, 1960). In a study by Davis and colleagues (1984), a 10-mg oral dose of thiamin was given in water, and the mean serum thiamin peaked at 24 nmol/L (7.2 µg/L) 42 percent above baseline. Within 6 hours the serum thiamin concentration had returned to baseline, 17 nmol/L (5.2 µg/L). Prompt urinary excretion of thiamin was also reported by Najjar and Holt (1940) and McAlpine and Hills (1941).

With higher pharmacological levels, namely repetitive 250-mg amounts taken orally and 500 mg given intramuscularly, nearly 1 week was required for steady state plasma concentrations to be reached; a mean elimination half-life of 1.8 days was estimated (Royer-Morrot et al., 1992).

Total thiamin content of the adult human has been estimated to be approximately 30 mg, and the biological half-life of the vitamin is probably in the range of 9 to 18 days (Ariaey-Nejad et al., 1970).
Clinical Effects of Inadequate Intake

Early stages of thiamin deficiency may be accompanied by non-specific symptoms that may be overlooked or easily misinterpreted (Lonsdale and Shamberger, 1980). The clinical signs of deficiency include anorexia; weight loss; mental changes such as apathy, decrease in short-term memory, confusion, and irritability; muscle weakness; and cardiovascular effects such as an enlarged heart (Horwitt et al., 1948; Inouye and Katsura, 1965; Platt, 1967; Williams et al., 1942; Wilson, 1983). In wet beriberi, edema occurs; in dry

Can taking a Vitamin B-12 supplement hurt me if I don't have a deficiency?
Q. I was lacking energy so I thought I'd give it a try. Could it potentially hurt me if B-12 deficiency isn't the problem?

A. For the lack of energy try:
B-complex, and Vitamin C with bioflavonoids.
