How effective is the treatment of Vitamin B12 deficiency even when it has affected the nerves.?

Q. Are there natural remedies? How soon can one see noticeable improvements in the patients. What are the early signs that the patient is responding to the B12 injections

A. I was going to answer with this: "generally, once nerve damage has occurred as a result of B12 deficiency, treatment with B12 provides little benefit in relieving the damage." However, I just found a scientific paper from 2011 in "Nutrition Journal" that cites references to studies that found: in cases of pernicious anemia, intramuscular injections of B12 can reduce neurological symptoms. Whether or not neurological symptoms that exist independently of pernicious anemia can be successfully treated is not clear.

In this same paper, the researchers found neurological improvements from high-dose oral supplements of B12 in elderly patients with low B12 status but with no overt neurological symptoms.

A. B12 deficiency, is a serious condition, however it takes YEARS to develope one...because we do have stored reserves in the body, such as bone marrow, liver cells atc...
However, serious deficiencies with polineuritis, anesthesia of vibration, and anemia (macrocytic or big erythrocytes anemia), are the main indication for treatment with INJECTED not oral B12, because sometimes, we lack a protein formed in the fundus of the stomach called "intrinsic factor" that links itself tp the B12, making it absorbable....
By injecting the B12, you bypass this possibility (pernicious anemia) and the B12 reaches directly the bone marrow and the storage sites....
However, if you are NOT deficient of B12 and still take it, there will be no harm, because the B12 has no intrinsic toxicity, and as other answerers above told to you, it is as expensive "placebo"......nothing else.....

My doc tested me for a vitamin d deficiency, what are the symptoms?

Q. Obviously havent gotten the test results back yet. Vitamin D is the one supplement I dont take but I do take a multivitamin. What are the symptoms of a deficiency?

A. In America adolescent girls are at greatest risk for Vit D deficiency. The test is expensive, supplementing is cheap AND NOT DANGEROUS unless you have liver damage or take way too much. Most common symptoms of borderline deficiency are back pain, diffuse and not resolving with exercise or therapy. More common w/ kids living indoors, not much sunshine. limited milk consumption..


Has anyone had experience with Soma plus Aspirin and codeine and Darvacet or ultram at the same time?
Q. I have been in pain for quite a long time. I am going to a Rheumatoligist a few times a month and getting numerous testing done. So far the only thing he has found is that I have a Vitamin D deficiency. I am currently taking Soma plus Aspirin and Codeine and Darvocet. I have been switched to extended release Ultram but have not gotten the script filled yet. The Soma and Darvocet used to work at keeping my pain away but I am now being awakened by it so thats why the switch to the extended release Ultram. I just wanted to know if anyone has taken this combo of meds for long periods of time and if they are now experiencing adverse effects of doing so. I don't want to have to take these meds but so far they are the only ones that don't make my symptoms worse so I really have no choice and I am afraid of the long term effects. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Oh and if it helps, I only take them at night before bed, I can't take the meds while at work.
I have had three different doctors plus my pharmacist tell me its ok to take these meds together. The amount of pain that I am in by the end of the day is terrible. I am asleep so I don't get a high off of them and I don't take them during the day. A small part of the pain that I have is stabbing pains in my legs, arms, bottoms of my feet, in my ears and on top of my head. I also have other symptoms but tjis is the worst. There are no other medications that take this pain away enough for me to sleep. I have had to choose the lesser of two evils and take these medications. If I don't take these meds I do not sleep at all. I am just worried about the long term effects of these meds. Also if anyone knows of any other treatments for this severe kind of pain. I would love to stop taking them...but thats not possible until a different treatment is found.

What vitamin deficiency causes under eye bags?

A. B12 is absorbed in the stomach. It requires a transport factor to get into the blood stream. This factor, called Intrinsic Factor , is manufacured by cells called Parietal cells in the stomach. In Pernicious Anemia, there are antibodies to the Parietal cells that shuts them down. No intrinsic factor, B12 not absorbed. Other causes are a strict vegetarian diet, Loss of that part of the stomach surgically, cancer of the stomach, chronic gastritis.

Cyanocobalamin is inert. It is the form the vitamin is excreted in, after binding with CN- ions. The active vitamin is hydroxocobalamin. The easiest way to replace B12 is to take Methylcobalamin sublingual. The sublingual route bypasses the gut, and Methylcobalamine is demethylated to hydroxocobolamin.

Lack of sleep does not cause a deficiency. a really bad diet can. Lack of sleep can cause other problems, tho, and you might consider talking with someone about your difficulty. If you are not a Medical Student or Resident, in the Military or in some other job that demands long hours, see someone.

A. Why would you want to avoid it? The vitamin K injection is important because newborn babies have very little vitamin K. A small proportion of babies suffer bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency (VKDB). Giving a vitamin K injection prevents this problem.

While VKDB is rare it can cause bleeding from the nose and mouth or into the brain. You won't always be able to see this bleeding. It can lead to brain damage or even death. While there are certain factors that increase the risk of bleeding, it isn't always possible to identify high or low risk babies so the injection is a good idea.

A. Calcium actually. And if you take/eat a lot of calcium, make sure you have just as much Vitamin D in your system. Calcium is hard to absorb without D and can lead to kidney stones. Magnesium and Phoshorus also aren't good to have too much of. Some vitamins though, like Vitamin C, you can have up to 300% of the Daily Value in one day and be fine. (My boyfriend tried those "Smoke Away" pills for quitting smoking. He needed to take 3 pills 3 times a day, and each dose was 300% Vitamin C. So he was getting 900% of the DV each day for 3 weeks and nothing happened to him. So Vitamin C isn't much to worry about either. Although I don't suggest you take that much for very long unless you need to.) -By the way, the Smoke Away pills DID work, but only for a short period of time until the little pills that you take when you get a craving ran out, then he went back to smoking again. Just in case you were wondering lol.

Don't worry too much about overdosing on Vitamin K and Iron because you might end up getting too little and that's not good either. You need at least 50% of the Daily Value of them or you can start feeling fatigued and getting cramps (especially leg cramps which are most associated with Potassium (K) deficiencies). Potassium is water-soluble though, so if you drink a lot of water, it washes out of your system faster and you need more of it. But if you only drink about 8 glasses or less of water per day, aim for 100% of the DV in a day.

Iron is also neccessary to keep your blood thick and healthy. Too much iron won't really HURT you either, per se. My ex once took 6 times the DV of iron by accident before donating blood (he read it as 100mg being 18% instead of 18mg being 100%) and took 6 iron pills to get over the 100% level lol! He was fine, his blood was just really "heavy" as the nurse explained. They still accepted it though. It's probably not good to do that very often though, so be careful.

Following ingestion, absorption of thiamin occurs mainly in the jejunum, at lower concentrations as an active, carrier-mediated system involving phosphorylation and at higher concentrations by passive diffusion. Thiamin is transported in blood both in erythrocytes and plasma.

Only a small percentage of a high dose of thiamin is absorbed, and elevated serum values result in active urinary excretion of the vitamin (Davis et al., 1984). After an oral dose of thiamin, peak excretion occurs in about 2 hours, and excretion is nearly complete after 4 hours (Levy and Hewitt, 1971; Morrison and Campbell, 1960). With higher pharmacological levels, namely repetitive 250-mg amounts taken orally and 500 mg given intramuscularly, nearly 1 week was required for steady state plasma concentrations to be reached; a mean elimination half-life of 1.8 days was estimated (Royer-Morrot et al., 1992).

Total thiamin content of the adult human has been estimated to be approximately 30 mg, and the biological half-life of the vitamin is probably in the range of 9 to 18 days (Ariaey-Nejad et al., 1970).

How do you get thicker skin around the eyes to remove Dark Circles and Visible veins?

Q. I have really darker color skin and visible veins beneath my eyes, this seems to be because the under eye skin is so thin, how can I get thicker skin underneath my eyes to cure the dark circles, I am underweight 6'0 135 pounds. My cheeks also appear to be too thin.

Thinning skin
